Making a Budget That Reduces Grocery Expenses

You normally go to the grocery store on certain times of the week to shop for food supplies. However, if you are not careful, you will be spending more than you should, which could leave you with an empty wallet throughout the rest of the week. Here are some tips on how to make a grocery budget that will help you cut down on expenses.

First, determine your normal spending by keeping your receipts. At the end of a certain period, say a week, sum up the amount that you spend as printed in the list. You may want to divide the items into categories such as produce, meat, pantry staples, and dairy. Use the regular price of the items to give you a realistic look at the exact amount you usually spend when buying groceries.

Next, look at the categories you have made and compute the total percentage of your grocery bill within each category. Strive to cut the biggest three spending areas by at least 20 percent. For example, if convenience food eat up a lot of your budget, you can lessen the cost by buying in bulk or switching to a cheaper brand. For meats, you can buy cheaper cuts, for example, burgers made of ground chuck instead of ground sirloin. You can also de-bone chicken parts yourself rather than purchasing expensive pre-de-boned chicken fillet. Next, delete any category or item that you can live without. For example, if you feel you can do away with chips to nibble on when watching TV, do not include that item on your next shopping budget. Finally, be on the lookout for discount coupons and vouchers. You can find these in newspapers, shopping magazines, and websites. These can tremendously lower your grocery expenses and increase your money's purchasing power.
